ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL

The Accessible Education and Resource Center (AERC) is dedicated to removing academic and institutional barriers for scholars with disabilities. We accomplish this through the coordination of individualized, legally compliant accommodations, proactive student support, and campus-wide education on accessibility and equity. Our mission is rooted in empowerment: to give every scholar the tools, resources, and advocacy they need to fully engage in the learning experience.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Navigating Accommodations and Expectations

We commit to:

  • Facilitating meaningful access to classrooms, resources, and educational materials
  • Providing timely and appropriate accommodations based on student needs and documentation
  • Supporting self-advocacy and independence among scholars with disabilities
  • Promoting a culture of inclusion that values and respects disability as part of human diversity

Our vision is to become a nationally recognized model for inclusive excellence in higher education. We envision a campus where:

  • Every scholar regardless of disability is welcomed, supported, and celebrated
  • Faculty and staff are educated partners in the accessibility process
  • Universal Design for Learning is standard practice
  • Students with disabilities are visible leaders, scholars, and innovators on campus

Accessibility is not a service it is a right. It is not the job of a few but the responsibility of all. Through collaboration, innovation, and integrity, the AERC will continue to drive a more just and accessible future for Jackson State University.

It is the policy and practice of Jackson State University to comply fully with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, and all other federal and state laws and regulations prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability. The ADA was designed to extend civil rights protection to people with disabilities. Title II of the ADA mandates that government agencies or those that receive government funds make their programs and services accessible to persons with disabilities. Even before the passage of the ADA, JSU was covered by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, sections 503 and 504, which mandated that programs and services be accessible to people with disabilities.
